Q: What is the difference between prescriptive and performance codes?
Q: Why are performance codes needed, for years prescriptive codes have succcessfully provided a high level of saefty for the lift industry why do we need performance codes and will they provide the same level of safety.
Q: How should National code develop performnace codes? Are there any guidelines available to assist them in this task?
Q: Once performance codes and their certification strategies have been developed should they replace prescriptive codes? Does this mean that in future the presciptive codes might disappear altogether.
Q: When will The ISO-GESR's be issued.
Q: Does PALEA have members on any of the ISO working groups?
A: Yes, PALEA currently has members serving on five of the ISO/TC178 working groups. This includes WG4, WG5, WG6, WG8 and WG10. PALEA also has members on a number of the task and study groups that operate under the auspices of the working groups.
Q: Is PALEA a member of ISO?
A: PALEA is an "A" member of the ISO/TC178 committee. Although membership  of ISO is normally restricted to countries only, in cases where ISO believes that an organisation can positively contribute to ISO it may admit that organisation as an "A" or Liason Member. As an "A" member PALEA may be a member of ISO/TC178 working groups and attend plenary meeting but has no voting rights.
Q: If a company has numerous registered operations throughout the Asia Pacific region can each operation join as an ordinary member?
A: No, a company can only be registered once as an ordinary member, all other operations may join as associate members. However, in the case where that company has an interest of fifty percent of less in  joint venture companies then up to two of those eligible joint ventures may join as ordinary members.
Q: Can a Joint Venture company join PALEA as an ordinary member if one entity of the joint venture is already an ordinary member of PALEA?
A: A joint venture company can join PALEA as an ordinary member if one entity of the joint venture company is already an ordinary member of PALEA provided that the aforementioned entity has a fifty percent or less interest of the joint venture company. Also where a company is an ordinary member of PALEA and has an interest in multiple joint venture companies then only two of those eligible joint venture companies can be accepted as ordinary members, the others could join as associate members.
Q: Are there different categories of membership and if so how do they differ from one another?
A:

In order to accommodate a wide range of members and cater for everyone's needs, three categories of membership are available. The three categoires are as follows;

  1. Ordinary member - Open to lift designers, manufacturers and installers - full voting rights- entry fee and annual fee applies
  2. Associate Members- open to national lift associations, lift component manufacturers, lift owners, consultants, architects etc - joining fee and annual fee applies.
  3. Honorary member - national code writing authority, code enforcement authority - no joining nor annual fee.
